Complete hydraulic system for Damen Shipyards

Doedijns, trusted partner for system integration

Knowing Doedijns as a trusted partner for system integration Damen Shipyards approached us to supply the complete hydraulic system for two 81-metre ferries of a Canadian ferry operator.

Both ferries contain two electric/hydraulic power packs (HPU) including manifolds, cylinders, connecting piping and electrical controls, which will control the opening and closing of the two bow doors (fore and aft). In addition to the bow doors, the HPU’s will also drive the capstans, anchor winch and the MOB door. Given the number of users to be controlled the job required an experienced integrator in maritime hydraulics as Doedijns. Years of experience and in-house knowledge enables Doedijns to design and supply HPU’s with electrical controls and translate this into a simple, easy operable system.

Intuitive controls for safe operation

The hydraulic systems will control multiple deck equipment, which means integration of the electrical controls and sensors of multiple systems into one control cabinet. To ensure reliable control of all equipment the control cabinet is designed to be easy operable with simple and intuitive controls. The simplicity of the controls enable easy maintenance and, if necessary, easy fault tracing. This all together leads to efficient work, safe operation, and higher productivity.

A-brand components for optimal performance

As a distributor, Doedijns has access to a broad range of A-brand components and therefore the possibility to select the most suitable components for an optimal performance of the system. For the most cost-efficient solution and to guarantee system reliability, the HPU’s are assembled with, among other components, SUN Pressure relief valves, Eaton Pumps, HAWE control valves and Siemens Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC’s).

Close cooperation

At Doedijns we work in close cooperation with our clients during each stage of the project. During the engineering phase the client requested the integration of additional equipment which resulted in a redesign of the initial system design. Through our in-dept knowledge we were able to fulfill the revised needs of the client during the complete project.

Seamless installation

‘All of our fit-for-purpose solutions are assembled and tested in-house’, says Alex Teeuw, Manager Electrical Drives & Controls at Doedijns, ‘This reduces commissioning time and ensures seamless installation and start-up.’ The systems for both vessels are functionally tested and commissioned by our Commissioning Engineers at Damen Shipyards Galati in Romania.

The vessels are expected to enter service in 2020. The 81-metre long design will have capacity to carry approximately 44 vehicles and up to 300 passengers and crew.
